HFC Fatigue-Scale 2.0
Video-based Evaluation of Fatigue in the field of vehicle handling
Fatigue and Road Traffic

Microsleep is one of the most common reasons for accidents in road traffic. According to the “Deutsche Verkehrswacht” ( German Road Safety Organization ), up to one quarter of all accidents in Germany is caused by falling asleep momentarily, by microsleep. This especially applies to long-haul truckers; still, every other driver who is suffering from lack of sleep or insomnia, or who is driving during the most dangerous period of night ( 1:00 am to 3:00 am ) is endangered, as well.
Detecting Fatigue
Yawning can be a first sign of fatigue. Apart from that, there is an abundance of physiologic and behavioral indicators that are typically related to fatigue. The problem: every one of those indicators for itself is not enough to detect or preclude fatigue reliably. The concept of Fatigue assessment via observation is a reliable method to determine the level of fatigue. A large of number of behavioral indicators are being systematically observed and then integrated into a global value of fatigue.
HFC Fatigue Scale 2.0
For an efficient and highly reliable conduct of studies with the usage of this method we use the “HFC Scale”: a systematization that is constantly being evolved and quality tested by us, and that is particularly able to support the assessment via video observation. The new and improved HFC Scale 2.0 now reliably differentiates the conditions of drivers in regard to their activation as well.
Our Offer : Fatigue – Analysis conducted by the Market Leader
HFC is Germanys brand leader when it comes to the assessment of states of fatigue. We professionally and efficiently conduct fatigue analysis in the field or in a simulator, using the HFC Fatigue Scale 2.0 for the evaluation of levels of fatigue. Our services are characterized by:
- Experience regarding night drive experimentation
- Trained experimenters, ensuring the driver's safety
- Utilization of the HFC Scale 2.0 with extraordinarily well-trained, experienced raters
- High reliability of the global fatigue judgements
Assessment Training
We offer our expertise in fatigue assessment and evaluation for the training of rating teams. You can subscribe to a one-day seminar, in which the participants are being taught the basics of fatigue assessment, introduced to the usage of the HFC Scale and put through concentrated training sessions; thus preparing them purposefully for the video-based assessment of fatigue. Beyond the one-day seminar, we regularly conduct advanced trainings with rater teams, aiming at consolidation and coordination of the members of the team. Those advanced trainings are being conducted with data from your specific project and include the measurement of the inter-rater reliability for one referential iteration.
