Simulators and Modeling

There are several reasons to work with simulations or models in human-factors studies. Digital prototypes are becoming a growingly important part of product development, and modeling human behavior can offer methodical and cost-related advantages, depending on the specific problem.  Simulator-based tests and models of human behavior and experience will become an essential part of the evaluation of the man-machine interaction, and therefore, an important part of the successful market introduction of modern products.

They are bound to establish themselves as irreplaceable parts of the PLM ( product–lifecycle management).

Advantages of Simulation and Modeling

  • Reproducibility:  Each scenario can be reproduced any time and as often as desired. In the “real world”, this would be a costly, complex endeavor, and in some cases, it wouldn’t be possible at all.

  • Safety:  Dangerous or even potentially life-threatening situations can only be tested with the help of simulators. Critical scenarios can be tested without danger or risk for the test persons.

  • Variability:  Changes in signage, control concepts or other infrastructural elements can be realized promptly and as desired, without the need for special permissions or reconstruction pauses.

  • Cost efficiency:  Simulators can be constructed with a limited budget as well, thanks to the use of common hardware parts, the modular setups of simulator cores and the collection of data in a stable architecture. There is an abundance of scalable solutions between simple video-based scenarios and highly immersive 3D-environments, adaptable to the needs of your projects.

Application Examples:

  • Driver models:   HFC has long-time experience in modeling human driving behavior. Those driver models are applied at virtual evaluations of vehicle dynamics or at evaluating tunnel configurations, among other things.

  • Evacuations models:   Modeling human behavior in case of an emergency or escape situation assists in the construction of public buildings regarding questions of evacuation.

  • Inspection simulations:   Virtual 3D-Simulations enable an inspection of the building at a time were only drafts exist, for example to answer questions regarding the signage, advertising appeal or behavior in case of an emergency.
